Revised Four-Year Standard Undergraduate Degree Programme in Computer and Robotics Education

 

Brief History of the Department of Computer and Robotics Education

The department of Computer and Robotics Education, University of Nigeria, Nsukka began as a unit domiciled in the then Department of Vocational Teacher Education, with the task of training teachers that will teach computer studies in schools and professionals in computer hardware maintenance, Information Technology, software application and programming.

The unit started in 1994 when a 2-year diploma programme for the Technical Teachers Training (TTTP) was offered. The program was later modified in 1996, to an Ordinary Diploma certificate program to accommodate other students who may not be technical teachers but with interest in computer studies. In 1998, the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) degree program in computer education commenced getting its first students majorly from the graduates of her diploma Program. Currently, the diploma programme has been scrapped and so the programme majorly gets her students from the Universities Matriculation Examination (UME) board in Nigeria.

Computer Education unit further launched her Master’s and PhD programmes in 2003 and has graduated many students at the Masters level and at the Ph.D level. The unit award postgraduate degrees in Hardware Maintenance, Software Development /Application, and Networking and Communication, and Robotics Education.

 

In 2015, the Computer Education unit became a full fledged Department of Computer and Robotics Education at the creation of the Faculty of Vocational and Technical Education, University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

The department of Computer and Robotics Education, University of Nigeria has graduated numerous first degree, masters’ and PhD holders, who are equally doing very well in schools, industries, banks, computing firms and other self reliance computer related entrepreneurship ventures.

The Lecturers in the unit are renowned and experienced professionals in computer related disciplines. A combination of Computer Educationists, Computer Engineers, and Computer Scientists make up the staff strength of the unit. The Department of Computer Education, University of Nigeria, has a vision of “COMPUTER LITERACY FOR ALL THROUGH QUALITY AND PRACTICAL EDUCATION”.

 

Since the inception of the Computer Education programme, the department has affiliated her programmes with other tertiary institutions in Nigeria.  This was one of the ways of ensuring the spread of the programme to the other parts of the country.  Some of the affiliated institutions include:

  • The Department of Technical Education at Yaba College of Technology, Yaba.
  • School of Vocational Technical Education at College of Education, Ikerekiti in Ekiti State.
  • Alvan Ikoku College of Education, Owerri, and
  • Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe.
  • Federal College of Education, Omoku.
